The Zócalo is the birthplace of Mexico
City and the heart of its historic center.
It features a stunning mix of colonial-
era and Aztec-era architecture,
government buildings, and vibrant
public spaces, all framed by colorful
streets, street performers, and bustling
markets.
Regardless of the crowds and the many
walks of life you’ll find here, it’s actually
very safe to explore, so don’t hesitate to
wander and soak in the energy.
After all, this plaza is one of the most
iconic scenes people think of when
they think of Mexico City.
I've visited the Zócalo more times than
I can count, and it's different every
time. Almost every day there is an
event going on. The Christmas holidays
light up the place, and Day of the Dead
is a whole other spectacle of its own.
I'm still discovering new things every
time I go.
Despite the energy and constant
motion, Zócalo never feels chaotic in a
threatening way. It’s the heart of the
city — loud, alive, and layered with
centuries of history unfolding in every
direction. A little bustle is a small price
to pay for standing in one of the most
iconic and visually powerful squares in
the world.

Photography notes
Wide open plaza with people flowing in
every direction. Historic buildings and flags
create strong lines and vanishing-point
perspectives. Street performers, vendors,
and colorful crowds make every shot full of
character.
Walk along the whole square and don't be
afraid to peek and explore the side alleys.
There are so many events going on every
day at Zócalo, be prepared for surprises.

SAFETY TIPS
The Zócalo is safe, but watch your gear and pockets in crowds. Stick to main areas and well-lit streets. Stay aware, and you’ll have a smooth, worry-free shoot.
