Anáhuac is another neighborhood that is a hidden gem for street photography. Just west of the San Rafael neighborhood.
This area is memorable for all the unique and sometimes quirky religious statues and monuments.
In Mexico—especially older, workingand middle-class neighborhoods— faith isn’t kept inside churches. People express devotion in the streets, on corners, and outside their homes. Statues of the Virgin of Guadalupe, saints, and crosses are acts of everyday faith, not official church projects.
The other memorable thing for me about this neighborhood is ordering a jugo de narnja (orange juice from a vendor, and receiving it in a plastic bag tied up to a straw.
This is an area untouched by tourism, so watch your surroundings and be discreet with your photographing. I recommend a guide but I didn't have any issues the few times I went out there in the early morning.
Other notable places to check out in the neighborhood is the military college, San Cosme skatepark, and BAGO cafe, a comfy dog friendly cafe spanning three floors.
SAFETY TIPS
Keep your setup minimal and discreet: small camera hidden, neutral clothing, and don’t linger in one spot. Stay aware of your surroundings, trust your instincts, and move on if a street doesn’t feel right.
BEST TIME TO VISIT AND WHERE TO EAT
Go early—sunrise is best for calmer streets, fewer people, and better light. Eat and drink at BAGO cafe afterwards.
