Plaza Garibaldi is the heart of Mexico City’s mariachi scene, famous for its music, nightlife, and colorful atmosphere.
I went hoping to catch the mariachi bands in full swing, but arrived a little too early—turns out the surrounding area was just as fascinating!
The streets around the plaza are filled with traditional cantinas, local food stalls, and vibrant murals, giving a real sense of the neighborhood’s character.
Even without the music in full force, wandering around the plaza and its streets is an experience in itself— capturing locals, street life, and the eclectic energy of this historic part of the city.
Whether you’re here for the mariachi later in the evening or just exploring, Garibaldi offers a rich taste of Mexican culture, music, and everyday life.
Garibaldi Photography Notes
As with all busy public spaces, while many people don’t mind being photographed, some locals and shopkeepers may prefer privacy. It is a good idea to tip the performers if you take pictures of them.
I particularly enjoyed exploring the side streets and peeking through residential courtyard entrances.

The plaza is a tourist spot, be aware of pickpocketers at night.
